Sewing Class Project #1: Tissue Sleeve

I recently took a four-week beginner sewing class at a local sewing machine shop, and it was an awesome experience. Our small group of students met for two hours one night a week and learned all the basics of using a sewing machine.

It was totally hands on from the moment we got in there, and at first we all felt a bit like we were driving without a license, as we revved our sewing machine pedals and eyed those speedy needles. But we had two infinitely patient teachers who helped us get over our fears, and we all managed to create a completed sewing project each week. We were amazed at what we were able to do in such a short time and how satisfying it was to make something with our own hands.

The first week, they kept it simple. We made these cute little sleeves to keep a pack of tissues in. They only took a few minutes, and we were all thrilled with the results. One woman immediately planned to make them for everyone in her bridal party.

They didn’t give us written instructions, they just sort of showed us how to do it, but here are some instructions that are pretty close to what we did. Give it a try!
